Benazir Nashonuma Update 2024: Addressing Child Malnutrition in Pakistan
Benazir Nashonuma
Pakistan’s got a big problem with child nutrition. The stats are pretty shocking and show that action is needed right away. Recent figures reveal that malnutrition is high in the country: 40.2% of kids are stunted, 28.9% are underweight, and 17.7% are wasted. This makes Pakistan the second highest in the region for these issues. So, the Benazir Nashonuma Program (BNP) is stepping up to tackle these problems to build a better future for kids.

Background and Objectives
The first 1,000 days—from when a baby is conceived until they turn two—are super important for brain development and health. It’s a time when kids grow fast and change a lot, so it’s perfect for bringing in help. The Benazir Nashonuma Program was created by the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to fight stunting in little ones under two and to help pregnant women stay healthy.

Key Objectives
Here are the main goals of the Benazir Nashonuma Program:
- Preventing Stunting: Cut down on how many kids under two are stunted.
- Improving Maternal Health: Help pregnant women gain weight while they’re expecting.

Design Parameters
The Nashonuma Program has a Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) plan to encourage folks to use health and nutrition services. BISP hands out extra cash—PKR 2,000 every three months for pregnant & nursing mothers (PLW), plus PKR 2,500 each quarter for every girl child. In exchange, moms need to attend check-ups during pregnancy, join awareness sessions, eat special nutritious foods (SNFs), and make sure their kids get vaccinations & health check-ups.
Project Area and Impact
It started as a small test in 14 districts, but it’s been successful, so now it’s all across Pakistan! By 2024, the Nashonuma Program is operating in 158 districts with 512 Nashonuma Centres—some of them even mobile!
The results so far have been amazing! Over 1,275,800 people have benefited from this program—there are 645,800 pregnant women and around 630,000 children involved. This outreach shows just how dedicated the program is to changing child nutrition in Pakistan.
Final Thought
The Benazir Nashonuma Program is a key move towards fixing malnutrition problems & boosting health for moms & kids all over Pakistan. Focusing on those first 1,000 days helps not just reduce stunting but also aims at betterizing maternal health while supporting wider economic growth goals. As it spreads its influence, this program shines like a light of hope against child malnutrition in Pakistan—working towards a healthier future for all children in the country.
